Optus 5G push for WA a much-needed upgrade

Dr David Honey MLA, Leader of the WA Liberal Party and Shadow Minister for Science, Innovation & ICT has welcomed new plans by Optus to rollout 5G Max in WA.
“The 5G Max investment by Optus in Western Australia is a welcome addition to ageing systems in need of a revamp”, said Dr Honey.
“We’ve seen this technology already in use over east in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and for West Australians to have the same access will be a great result.”
Optus also announced plans to push 5G Max accessibility to WA’s regions, after a $1.5 billion investment into low-band spectrum – expanding internet access to more locations.
Dr Honey said regional internet investment has been long overdue and will propel regional West Australians into the future.
“In the past our regions have been neglected – with many living in rural, remote and regional areas having extremely limited internet access and sometimes none at all.
“To see Optus go above and beyond to provide for people across all of WA is fantastic and will finally start to bring our rural, remote and regional areas into the future.”
Dr Honey said Internet services are essential to be able to carry out even the simplest tasks in our daily lives, making it critical infrastructure for all.
“It is important that internet services are accessible to each of us and more so given the vast area of our State.
“This initiative is vital to the greater diversification and decentralisation of our State.
“This project is the booster Western Australia needs to catch up with the rest of the country. It’s great that Industry has taken the matter into their own hands.
“I’m looking forward to the commencement of the roll-out come September 2022 and greatly anticipate the results when the new infrastructure comes online”, said Dr Honey.
