Shadow Minister for Child Protection Nick Goiran is angered by the McGowan Government’s repeated failure to protect victims of child sexual abuse as once again, during parliamentary question time it was revealed that victims of child sexual abuse remain forced to attend the same public school as their perpetrator.
“The McGowan Government continues to fail to take personal responsibility for their role in leaving these victims vulnerable to re-traumatisation. Survivors of child sexual abuse are placed in an untenable situation every single school day and this government, despite knowing about this for more than three years, continues to do nothing about it” Mr Goiran said.
“The issue was first uncovered after dogged questioning over the government’s response to Operation Fledermaus, which investigated rampant child sexual abuse in the Pilbara and
resulted in dozens of arrests and the government’s commitment to protect children in the region.
“Despite repeated questioning in 2018, 2019, 2020 and a resolution of the Legislative Council that was passed unanimously in September 2019 acknowledging the need to ensure that no further harm is caused to victims by ongoing contact with alleged perpetrators, we are not seeing any reduction in the numbers.
“Time and time again we receive minimalist responses to questions with zero follow up action. The McGowan Government needs to explain why they continue to allow this horrendous practice of allowing perpetrators of child sexual abuse to attend school with their victims, day after day.”
